Mission:
M01 - The Hooke
Location: Counselor's Office, USS Hooke
Timeline: Present
Aval still had the conversation from the previous evening on her mind. On the one hand, she understood where the Doctor was coming from and perhaps Aval had come across to strongly in her attempt to provide empathetic support for the young officer. On the other hand, Aval felt like she was in the right and she had been justified in her line of questioning. She had consulted with the notes from her time at the Academy.
There wasn't an answer there either, and so from there she tried to just let the entire situation pass. Aval could talk to Elle, however, she feared that talking to Elle would only result in another incident with the Doctor and Aval wasn't about causing problems unnecessarily. It would be more difficult to build new bridges if she destroyed them was how that saying went, or so Aval thought.
She eventually turned her attention to other things, such as the psychological well-being of the crew on board. The Captain had mentioned some concerns with the crew being so young, and perhaps that had even played a part in her voicing her own concerns with the Doctor. Aval would probably need to re-address that that at a later time. Aval didn't see anything out of the ordinary with the crew.
Most of them were certainly young with many being first time officers. The enlisted crew also seemed to have a lack of experience within their position. This left the Vulcan scratching her head because in most cases Starfleet didn't do this sort of thing. There was one exception to that rule though, Lieutenant Sam Bancroft had been the Chief Operations Officer on a previous ship.
"Odd choice," The Vulcan said under her breath. She shrugged and chose to do some further digging into the Lieutenant and saw her answer almost immediately. He'd been one of the officers that Starfleet, and the Captain, offered an Executive Officer's position on board both his previous ship and the current one. "Strange," Aval said to herself. It seemed rare to find anyone not ready for command. Sam was clearly an anomaly and she made a mental note about that.
The rest of the crew were practically in what she would consider to be routine positions where they were pretty new as department heads or any sort of positional authority. Aval knew she was in that same situation as many of the others, being pretty new as well. Aval leaned all the way back in her chair with her arms crossed as she thought about her decision to join Starfleet in the first place.
This was only supposed to be an experiment and yet here she was on board her first starship doing the very job she'd swore was only for science. "I suppose I should figure out how to work with the crew then," She said and stopped her thoughts from getting too far out of line with what she was supposed to be doing. They really did seem to be everywhere this morning and it was probably the lack of tea.
Aval stood up, grabbed tea out of the nearby replicator, and sat back down. The crew would be okay and she made several notes in her log after reading through their different profiles. She turned her attention next to the civilians on board, though they didn't have many of the same problems of inexperience as the Starfleet personnel. "Perhaps that'll be helpful rather than a hindrance?" She said out loud. Then she profiled the three girls that were on board, children of different members of the crew.
The girls seemed pretty well adjusted to life in Starfleet with two of the girls having plenty of shipboard experience while the third girl seemingly only been on a space station prior to this. "It'll be fine," She mumbled and left more notes before moving onto her next project. The Captain would be pleased with her report, but he may also want her to sit down with a few of the crew so she mentally prepared herself for that possibility.
The Terra Novan history was a bit more interesting for her, the colony had been established as one of the first attempts by humans to leave their home system. Then it was impacted by an asteroid strike before the radiation which greatly degraded the way of life for the people living there. Now, they'd rebuilt over the last few hundred years and were ready to try and re-establish a presence near the original colony.
Aval saw nothing that indicated any problems with the Novans that were alive now, the people there were happy and healthy compared to their counterparts. Some of them even left their homeworld to join Starfleet when they were old enough to do so. The Novans were human, they just no longer saw themselves as human and she assumed that made sense. The people who were on the planet Deneva saw themselves much the same way.
Having been an angry group of people out for revenge and believing that humans from Earth had attacked them, they'd managed to get that turned around. Aval saw nothing that would impact their mission and perhaps the Captain was allowing his concerns about things going wrong on their first mission to get out of hand. She pursed her lips, "I'll have to tell him that during our next consultation process."
She took a drink from her tea and stood up, "So to recap, it appears that the crew may be pretty solid and the Captain's concerns are unfounded. The mission to Terra Nova also appears to be pretty routine so I don't think we'll have anything to worry about there. The Captain may be worrying about nothing, or he may be trying to dot all of his letters..." She hesitated, "I don't know that expression very well."
Aval took a deep breath, "Now I do believe I'm going to go have a conversation with the ship's chief medical officer to make sure we're still on good terms." She paused, "If we were on any kind of terms at all." Aval took her tea and headed for the ship's sickbay.
